NFL television ratings are down nearly 10% from a year ago. According to Nielsen, the league saw a 9.7% decline during the 2017 regular season. Average game viewership fell by 1,600,000, from 16,500,000 to 14,900,000. Ratings were down about 8% the previous year, which was largely blamed on the presidential election.
This year's decline is attributed in part to NFL player protests of the national anthem and ensuing criticism of the league by President Donald Trump.
