Tampa-area Deputy Fired, Jailed for Threatening Black Arrestee at Gunpoint

TAMPA -- A Hillsborough sheriff's deputy has been fired and faces charges after the sheriff said he pointed a gun at a man in custody and threatened to kill him for not identifying himself.

Sheriff Chad Chronister says Janak Amin , a sergeant and 21-year veteran, was interviewing an African-American man who walked away from a drug rehab facility. . When deputies found the man at Nebraska Avenue and Annie Street Thursday, Chronister says Amin held a gun to the man's head and threatened to "splatter his brains" on the concrete.

Other deputies intervened and de-escalated the situation, including a detective who told Amin that the man was the subject of his investigation.

Chronister calls Amin's actions "egregious" and says the subject was not violent or uncooperative. But he does not believe Amin was motivated by race.

The sheriff says the subject was not being violent or uncooperative and was quickly identified by the detective who was looking for him. The victim had been mistakenly dropped off at DACCO by deputies before walking away on his own. That error will be the subject of an internal affairs investigation

Amin is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
