Florida Doctor Finds Dying Baby In The Bahamas After Dorian

Baby In Bahamas

Aventura Hospital's trauma surgeon, Dr. Gwen DeLeon, is just one of many doctors and relief workers returning home with harrowing stories of their rescue missions in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian devastated the area.

Dr. Gwen DeLeon spent 4 days in the Abacos assisting survivors including this little baby. Dr. DeLeon found the baby in a neighborhood near Marsh Harbour that had been evacuated for the most part. However, she said some immigrants were choosing to stay in the destruction, including the baby and his father. DeLeon says the baby was living in rubble in a house in terrible condition with the roof caving in, no windows, water, or electricity.

According to DeLeon, the baby was dying in the heat and had nothing to eat and no clean water to drink. The baby also had contracted a severe respiratory infection and was struggling to breathe.

After some pleading, DeLeon was able to convince the father to let her take the child to a local clinic where he was placed in an oxygen chamber and then evacuated to Nassau. The baby is now receiving intensive care and most likely would not have survived had he not received help.

Dr. Gwen DeLeon is just one of many heroes and we are so happy this baby is alright!
